Mesh vs Leather Office Chairs from China: What Factories Actually Charge
“Should I go mesh or leather?” is the question I get most from first-time office-chair buyers, and the honest answer is that it depends less on taste than on your market, your climate and your price ceiling. Here is how China factories actually price the two, and where each one wins.
What you are really paying for
A mesh chair’s cost lives in the back — the mesh fabric grade, the frame that tensions it, and the lumbar mechanism. A leather chair’s cost lives in the upholstery — genuine vs bonded vs PU leather, the foam under it, and the labor to wrap and stitch it. That is why a basic mesh staff chair and a basic PU “leather” manager chair can land at similar FOB prices, while a genuine-leather executive chair sits in a different league entirely.
Indicative FOB ranges from China factories
- Mesh task chair — roughly US$25 to 60 depending on mechanism and mesh grade.
- PU “leather” manager chair — roughly US$35 to 80.
- Bonded-leather executive chair — roughly US$70 to 130.
- Genuine-leather executive chair — US$150 and up.
These are ballpark numbers for guidance, not quotes — gas-lift class, foam density and base material swing them either way.
Where mesh wins
Hot and humid markets. Mesh breathes, so for Southeast Asia, the Middle East and southern US summers it is the comfort default. It also reads as modern and ergonomic, which suits tech offices and co-working spaces. The catch: cheap mesh sags, so insist on the mesh grade and a tension test.
Where leather wins
Executive and boardroom settings, cooler climates, and markets where “leather equals status.” For most volume buyers that means PU or bonded leather, which photographs like genuine at a fraction of the cost — just be honest in your listing about which it is, because customers and customs both care.
