Lounge and reception chairs sit in hotel lobbies, office waiting areas, airport gates and co-working spaces — high-traffic public settings where comfort, durability and looks all have to hold up at once. Sourcing them from China means thinking less like a furniture buyer and more like a facilities manager. Here is what matters.

Where lounge and public seating is made

Public and contract seating is a specialty in its own right, with strong factories in Guangdong and Zhejiang that have decades of experience fitting out hotels, airports and offices worldwide. These are not the same shops that make home accent chairs — contract seating is engineered for abuse, and the specialists hold the certifications and testing to prove it.

Contract grade is the whole point

A lounge chair in a lobby gets sat in hundreds of times a day by strangers who do not treat it gently. That is why contract-grade construction matters: heavier frames, reinforced joints, and upholstery rated for tens of thousands of rub cycles (the Martindale or Wyzenbeek test). When you quote, ask for the abrasion rating and whether the model is contract-rated — a residential accent chair will not survive a public space.

What to specify

  • Upholstery. Commercial-grade fabric, PU or genuine leather with a high abrasion rating and, for healthcare or hospitality, a wipeable antimicrobial option.
  • Foam. High-density, CMHR (combustion-modified high-resilience) foam for public spaces, which holds shape and meets fire standards.
  • Frame. Hardwood or metal engineered for the load; ask about the internal frame, not just the visible legs.
  • Fire rating. BS 7176 (UK contract), CA TB 117 or the relevant standard for your market — venues and insurers require it.

Modular and bench seating

For airports, lobbies and waiting rooms, modular and bench (beam) seating is common — chairs that link together or mount on a beam. If that is your need, confirm the factory does beam systems specifically, including the number of seats per beam and ganging hardware.

MOQ and lead time

Contract seating MOQs usually run 50 to 300 per model depending on complexity, and project orders can be larger. Lead times are 30 to 45 days, longer for custom upholstery. For a project, always order a sample and confirm the fabric and foam match the spec before the full run.
