Shipping Chairs: FCL vs LCL, and How to Not Overpay on Freight

Published 12 6 月, 2026

Two ways to ship chairs from China: FCL (Full Container Load) where you book the whole container, or LCL (Less than Container Load) where your goods share a container with other shippers. The right choice depends on your order size, time tolerance, and risk preference.

The cost crossover

A 40HQ FCL from Ningbo to a major US or European port: US$2,800-4,500 depending on season. That’s flat regardless of whether the container has 100 chairs or 450 chairs.

LCL is priced per cubic metre: US$95-160 per m³ depending on lane. A typical KD office chair takes 0.13 m³. So 100 chairs = ~13 m³ = US$1,200-2,100 LCL.

At 100 chairs: LCL is much cheaper than FCL (US$1,500 vs $3,500).

At 200 chairs: LCL is ~US$2,800, FCL is $3,500. Close.

At 300 chairs: LCL is ~US$4,200, FCL still $3,500. FCL wins.

The hidden costs of LCL

LCL freight cost is just one part of LCL total cost:

  • Origin CFS handling: US$30-60 per m³
  • Destination CFS handling: US$25-50 per m³
  • Demurrage risk: LCL containers consolidate from multiple shippers — yours might wait 5-10 days for the container to fill
  • Damage risk: chairs share container with other goods. Wood furniture is common in LCL. Furniture-on-furniture transit damage is real.

The fully-loaded LCL cost is usually 20-40% higher than the base freight quote.

The hidden value of FCL

  • Your goods only — no co-mingling damage risk.
  • Door-to-door scheduling: you control loading and unloading times.
  • Lower per-unit damage rate (typically 1-2% vs 3-5% for LCL).
  • Faster transit — no waiting for the container to fill.

The decision rule

Order < 150 chairs: LCL almost always.
Order 150-250 chairs: Run the actual math by route. Sometimes LCL wins on cost but FCL wins on damage rate.
Order 250-400 chairs: FCL almost always. Underfilling a 40HQ is still cheaper than the LCL alternative.
Order > 400 chairs: Pure FCL math.

Two routes that change the answer

Some routes are unusually expensive on LCL because the destination port has limited CFS infrastructure. Northern Europe (Hamburg, Antwerp, Rotterdam) handles LCL efficiently. Smaller ports (Ho Chi Minh City, Lagos, Salvador) have higher LCL handling costs and longer dwell times. Always price both options for unusual destinations.

Practical tip

If you’re at 200 chairs and considering LCL, see if you can increase the order to 280 chairs and switch to FCL. The extra 80 chairs add maybe US$3,500-5,000 in factory cost but save you US$1,500-2,500 in freight and reduce per-unit cost by US$5-8. The math usually works if you can sell the extra inventory in 2-3 months.
